Christopher Piper Wines Rioja Muga Seleccion Especial Reserva 2016
Brand: Christopher Piper Wines
Bodegas Muga, Haro, Rioja Alta The vineyards are located in the Oja and Tir¢ river valleys of La Rioja Alta but the winery is based on the outskirts of Haro, the historical home of Rioja's most prestigious bodegas. Bodegas Muga was created in 1932 and over the years Muga wines have gained international recognition and acclaim. Meticulously faithful to their traditional wine-making methods, Muga use the classic Rioja grape mix - Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano which are vinified in French and American oak vats before being aged in French and American oak casks. The wines therefore spend 48 months in oak followed by 3 years in the cellars before being released. The wine has a good ruby colour and on the nose, exhibits a very powerful and attractive bouquet with hints of cinnamon and oak. Meaty and full-bodied, it is well rounded and elegant with great structure and balance. Parker: Muga Seleccion Especial 2012 "is sourced from the same blend as Prado Eneas and from the same zone selected from geologically older plots, usually in higher terraces where the vines are at least 30 years' old. Fermentation is carried out in oak vats and aged in barriques for twenty eight months, initially in new barrels and then transferred to used ones. This is more backward and closed than the Reserva with a more subtle and elegant nose, a lighter palate, with fine grained tannins, and great acidity and length. The Reserva's big brother."
