Domaine Jean Marechal Magnum: Mercurey 1er Cru les Naugues 2016 Marechal
Brand: Domaine Jean Marechal
Domaine Jean Marechal From the oldest plot at Domaine Marechal and planted more than 60 years ago, these old vines giving their aromatic complexity and depth that we so admire in the Cuvee Naugues. This particular cuvee get given extra special attention resulting in a deep red wine with a purple hue, slight toasty vanilla notes on the nose and very ripe black fruits. Its concentrated velvety mouth with silky tannins is of extremely high quality. The village of Mercurey, situated on the main Chalon to Autun road, is hardly one of the most attractive in Burgundy but it is the centre of production of the best reds of the Cote Chalonnaise. When we first started dealing with this impeccably run estate, the late Jean Marechal was at the helm and was making wines that one could often describe as 'overtly traditional' and which took a long time to show their real colours. The arrival of Jean's son-in-law, Jean-Marc Bovagne, in the late 1990s saw a move towards more modern winemaking and the gradual introduction of the individual premiers crus on the labels. Up until then, all the premiers crus (which represent a little over 50% of the domaine's holdings) were blended together and sold as Cuvee Prestige. Jean-Marc introduced de-stalking, a higher percentage of new oak barrels and shortened the fermentation time to make wines with more fruit, depth and vigour. About ten years ago, Jean-Marc Bovagne was joined by his two sons, Quentin and Thomas, and they have elevated this great estate into the top tier of the Cote Chalonnaise.
